To Be A Monster

I've talked for the last few months about this Frankenstein story that I've been writing and illustrating, and promised a preview. So, here it is. 4 pages, not really in any order. Everything done by me and my man Jean! Usually I go in and tweak alot of things that jean sets up, but he's getting too good now. I didn't have to do much. I just added some textures and brightened somet things up.

Going into this, I wanted to make it creepy and make you feel that this was a grimy world. I wanted the lines to feel like throw back to the old school style of comics. I penciled and inked these pages very fast with the intentions of keeping it very loose and from the gut. I wanted each line to be from instinct and not from planning. So, the faster I inked, the less I would think about adding alot of noodling detail. This was more about an idea than an atmosphere than it was about showing how much detail I could add in the drawing.

It's very different for me, but I hope you guys give it a chance anyway. Let me know what you think.

This is fucking sweet dude. I like that you're tooling around outside the box. If only they would let you do some mainstream superheroes in this way.
Enjoy, it looks like you already are :O)

Night and Day from your mainstream spandex superhero stuff, but then again so is the subject matter. I'm really liking what your laying down here Mr. Young and I think it is a great fit with the subject matter.

I'm a big fan of the classic monsters over the hack slash stuff and, after seeing these pages, I'm really looking foward to picking up this book.

WOW! These pages have so much raw energy! I love the looseness and the grit that oozes from the pages. Very nice approach to a frankenstein comic!

Oh, I just got B-Sides today and it's sick! I almost pissed my pants when I saw that Hellboy on pg 68!

thank you everyone. i'm glad you are all open to different takes on art. it's always an iffy thing when you want to try new things. I always wonder if people will be closed off to it, but you guys are great. thank you for the kind words and support.

And Chris, I'm so glad you like the book. I hope you dig the quality. I tried to go above and beyond with the package of this one.

It looks really good. I like the roughness in both the ink and the color.

Looks like a little Mignola influence there in the pacing.

Show us the b/w's!

Fantastic, as always.

I also think Jean has outdone himself. The restrained pallette really brings to mind the feeling of old ink and older colours while still maintaining the tonal range and "pop" that modern readers demand.

I'm also happy to see that first panel... I thought it was just a sketch when you posted the lines, but I really liked the mood - glad to see it (or a variation) made its way into the book.

Looking forward to it...

I love this type of grimy art. It just gives the story a much darker feel. Kepp it up, Skottie. this is awesome.

Well, in short; AWESOME!
I washoping that it would still show some of your original style, and it does, even though this is much more raw, i still see it's an original Skottie ;)

Love it.

I really respect where your style is going and how it has evolved over time. You have integrated the cartoon style, which I really enjoy, along with the heavy shadows and dynamics of black and white. (I'm thinking Frank Miller, Sin City) With all of it combined It makes your work stand out that much more. You and Bachalo are two of my favorite artists and two of my largest influences in my art, and I am happy to see a change of pace to a more serious style. Very gritty and emotional. Keep experimenting and keep it coming, I will be picking up this book for sure.

Amazing art! i'm hooked i think your style goes very well with the horror genre. i love the way you switched it up to acomodate the theme. awesome work you should be proud of this one!

i also got your sketch book in the mail. i love the effort and work that went into making it a hardcover book and not some photo copied book with staples in it. it is a great sketch book with so much great art everytime i look at it i find something new.

Hey hey,

Some fans in the UK here, just to say that we aren't the biggest fans of this new stuff... We ain't sayin its bad, we just prefer your other stuff... Colours n stuff on Frankenstein looks a bit DC Swamp thing, just used to seeing nice crisp colours and lines... Dunno, just doesn't look 'Skottie'...

Hey Skottie,

I love the new style!!! When is to be a monster going to be available? I met you back at the Tononto Comicon 2 years ago. Your one of the nicest and coolest artists out there! At that show i bought the Ghost Rider pinup you did. It's AWSOME! and hanging proudly up on my wall. Anyway, i love the new stuff and keep up the good work.

Frank

ps What cons are you going to be doing this year?

Anonymous said...

It kind of stinks that in the printed version there is no artistic credit given to anyone other then Skottie doing the story. That kind of bites for Jean doesn't it?

Doug said...

BRILLIANT! Loved this story. The art captured perfectly the Hammer/Universal horror feel. Please tell me you've got more of Frankenstein's monster coming!
