New X-Men 42 Teaser [UPDATED]

This week has been insane. I have no extra time to dedicate towards warm ups are anything that is no work. So, since I've had nothing to update with since the weekend, i thought I would pick some panels out of my latest issue of New X-Men and give you guys a peek.

As you can see, I switched up my game this time around. I decided that I wanted to take these last 2 issues and play around a little. So, I pulled out the brush and started inking away. Everything in the previous issues were very tight and clean, and I wanted to give these 2 books a loose, organic feel. Now that I look back, I wish I would have done the Magik arc like this. Hind sight is 20/20 right.

I almost wanted to try and bring back the feeling of the New Mutants master Bill Sienkiewicz and just make it feel like the lines are moving all over the paper. I just used brush and ink and some white out pen. I truly just drew like I normally do and then let my hand go crazy in the finishes. I didn't care if lines touched, or closed, or even looked straight. I loved doing, and I guess I'll find out from you guys if it worked or not.

But I can't forget the final touch that makes it what it is. The colors by Jean. He followed my lead with the inks that I laid down and just went to town with the digital brush. I think the colors keep that messy vibe and really add alot of energy.

[UPDATE] Holy shit! This is fucking great! From a cover that is only a month old, someone decided they liked the characters, and my designs enough to bring them to life. I never thought that I would think costumes are so cool. It just goes to show that if you stroke my ego, you are no longer a geek for wearing a costume, you are THE SHIT!!!!!!

enjoy

Just found your blog a few days ago. I've been a fan of your art for a good while now. But the new stuff is way improved. The wild inks works well with what your trying to convey. I hope that you choose to keep going this way!!

I'm diggn' the looser brush style. It looks really nice, but still stays true to your style. Some of my favorite stuff you've done is the Frankenstein story, so I'm pretty excited to see you take this route.

when you said you were going "sloppy" I pictured it being much Looser and sloppier. But once everything gets colored and shrunk down, it looks awesome!!!!!

More movement, and energy. Too much rendering can definitely make everything look too stiff.......

Really enjoying the evolution in your career. Not even a fan of the New X-Men stuff in general, but your art keeps me picking it up.

I LoVE this stuff!!! You just keep raising the bar with your art, and at the same time your style prevails. The color is great and all but I would kill to see the original black & whites with the brush strokes and line weight.

OMG! That's me as Pixie (I have photo proof and a costume to prove it if anyone doesn't believe me)

(and just for the record we've also done old Pixie, Wallflower, Gold Elixir and DJ)

Yay!!!

Finally some stardom after last year (where I was "that gold kid" and "kid who has no visible powers but is dressed like the pixie girl")! That would be me in the green. They were pretty cheap costumes, but I'm honored to have your approval. The yellow in our costumes is all from duct tape, so is the green on my cap and the glove.

This is so cool by the way, I feel famous!

Looks like you're having fun. Feels more traditional and less digital. Very nice.

I enjoyed the hell out of this book...you know how marcos mateu does his panel border in el pacifico with armand serrano and marcelus vignali...when I was seeing this loose style I thought....you could of done that to the boarders and it would of fit...but ne ways...it was extra tight ne way with out that. :D

Scottie, I just wanted to say that the messy style on the New X-Men comic was the whole reason I started the series. I love it, and I am very glad I found your blog so I can put an artist with the artwork. Are you going to be doing this style more in the future because I dig it entirely. No other comic I've found has the energy your drawings do.

hey mr. young you are my favorite comic artist and new x-men was my favorite comic book comeback, the art team of young x-men is good but you are for me a more appropriate atris,

good luck in your new proyects i wait for it
