I Love You, Beth Cooper

I Love You, Beth Cooper is the name of a book that someone put in list of book suggestions...and I thank you. What a fucking outstanding book! Really. It's been years since I've read book that made me laugh out loud through out the entire thing. It is truly funny. Not just cute, you know, something that makes you smile and say "that's clever." No, I really was laughing out loud.

It's smart, funny, and covers a time in life that we can all relate to. It reminded me of the classic John Hughes films of the 80's focusing on the odd ball characters in school. Larry Doyle is the author (this is his first novel) and had the added bonus for me being from the Chicago Suburbs. It had a midwest feel to it and I can relate to that.

I won't go into it that much because I don't want to ruin it. But for anyone that has read it, or will read it, I want to know if you think he will write another one. So, todays drawing is of Denis Cooverman, the stories main character. GO READ THIS BOOK NOW!

I'm also going to add a side bar to show what I'm reading right now if any of you would like to read along.

enjoy

That's an awesome Dennis Cooverman. Now I want you to draw the the scene of all five of them in the car. Or at least give me a Treece!

That's a really great drawing of Dennis! Glad you dug the recommendation...I hope you draw up a Beth Cooper or even that jerk Kevin. Love the art, you rock, man.

I have to say that I had an idea to take classic fictional characters and bring them to life in photography...and to see it brought to life (sorta) then i have faith that one day i will make it happen...

Never heard of the book before, but your drawing of this Denis Cooverman, makes want to pick it up and start reading it somehow ... :p

Ever thought of creating a graphic novel based on a book?

Cheers!

WEll if you like Beth Cooper so much check out Apathy and Other Smal Victories by Paul Neilan. Similar sense of humor and insanity. anotehr one to laugh out loud to.

also Flight by Sherman Alexei i just finished and thought it pretty darn good.

If you like Freaks & Geeks, check out Kick Me by Paul Feig - co-executive producer & co-creator of Freaks & Geeks, Feig details his excruciating growing pains as a nerd in high school. In fact a lot of the absolutely humiliating and awkward stories of the Geeks in the show come from his real life.

Also Joe Meno's The Boy Detective Fails is an amazing book. If you like The Venture Brothers or (and I know you don't, but dammit I do) Wes Anderson Films which mix comedy with melancholy through the lens of failure, then this book is for you. Truly the best book I've read in the past year.

As always, love hearing you on Around Comics and love all of your work. Keep it up!

I picked up the book two days ago and haven't been able to put it down since. Well... except to post here.
But the book is in a word: Awesome. And the pic of Denis can be described similarly.

Hey Skottie - if you get a moment, can you answer me something. Im doing my first graphic novel, and was wondering how you approached your first book - Im drawing all sorts of stuff - and am now asking for contributing writers to give me their stories to illustrate - waiting for something of substance that sparks my imagination. How did you team up with a good writer? Could you drop me a reply if you get time at coolmccool@hotmail.com - thanks Skottie - I think your style is the best Ive seen - I really dig it.

I heard you mention this on the AC podcast. The wife happened to be at the bookstore at the time. I took it on a business trip and read it on the plane in one sitting. This book is surprisingly good. Thanks for the recommendation. I've got one for you. Read Cormac McCarthy's The Road. I read it on that same business trip and it's amazing but be sure and have something else handy to read afterwards because it is extremely depressing.

You should totally do a Beth, Cammy, and Treece pic. That'd be AWESOME!
