Testing, Testing, One, Two

I'm still playing around with this Cintiq....and I LOVE THIS THING.  It really is just amazing.  I thought that it would feel different and make me draw a little strange but it feels just as natural as anything.  In fact, in a lot of ways, it feels easier making drawing a little more effortless and fun.  There's not bearing down to get that last bit of lead to do what you want.  There's navigating around heavily erased, or drawn over areas creating insane amount of dirt and smudge all over the paper.  It's always clean, it's always bright and there is no eraser dust all over the place.

Again, these are just quick warm up doodles.  The head shot is to test a program called Sketchbook Pro 2009.  I downloaded the trial version of this program and it's crazy how much like drawing with a pencil this is.  This program is perfect for drawing, but so far, not that great for the kind of inking I'd like to do.

The other is in painter.  Painter's pencil tool is very good as well, and because of the inking options in Painter, I may prefer this program to the other.  I'm not sure yet.

And, I thought I would drop a little OZ Preview on you.  Just a tiny one to get you excited.  I'm having fun using the loosed inking style on this and after some back and forth and a few test pages from both of us, Jean-Francois Beaulieu has set a new bar for colors in my eyes.   I knew there was a reason this guy has been my right hand man for so long.

Great sketches,

I can't wait to see more of the OZ stuff. I'm super-ultra-crazy excited.

Your making the cintiq sound pretty appealing, I have an intuos but I've never had the chance to try the cintiq out. I'll have to search one out and give it a try.

It would be great to see what you can do with colour and what not, when you get the time

Cheers,
James

So when is the ETA for the OZ stuff? I want to make sure I order it through Diamond (or other more reliable means), so I guess I need the official title of it too if you have it??

Hey Skottie,

This work is looking awesome!

I used to use Painter for my penciling and inking, and found it an excellent program for doing this. I now do eveything with 'real' pencil and paper though, I feel I have more control this way. But that's only because I don't have a Cintiq, 'cause if I did, I'd be back to digital.

Anyways, if you wanna do inking in Painter, the best brush I found for this was the 'Fine Camel 10' brush, in the Oils section. I changed the following settings:

SIZE: Size - 8.0
Min Size - 2%

WELL: Resaturation - 100%
Bleed - 5%

These settings work really nicely and still give a good brush inked look with good line variation.

I also used the 'Cover Pencil' for penciling, worked quite nicely. And I used blue to pencil in which worked really well for inking over, plus I just liked the look of the blue pencil.

If you wanna see the work I produced with Painter, go to http://maxgorilla.com, pages 2-59 were penciled and inked in Painter.

Looking forward to seeing more from you.

-Kev

I just starting using Sketchbook pro 09... sick program. The lines are mint, but I agree with the inking it's not as good as Painter or even Photoshop, but I love the feel of sketchbook with my Wacom. Inspiring work. Take care.
