Scaredy Cat!

The is the cover to issue 2 of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.  I'm starting to hit my stride with the feel and characters of this world and having a ton of fun doing it.

[UPDATE]  The first issue hits stands in Dec.  And here is my penciled version.  The pencils were done digitally in Sketchbook Pro, and the inks done with brush and ink on paper.

When I took on this project, I thought that it would be something that I would get the most kick out of and most would just think it's ok.  In today's comic market it, it's about how dark you can go and how "real" things seem.  I'm not saying that's bad, but it doesn't seem to leave room out there (in the direct market at least) for books filled with whimsy and fantasy.  So I thought to myself "I love Oz, I grab some paychecks while drawing something I love.  Hopefully people will remember when I get back to "proper" comics."  See, even I started to think the same way.  Not in tights, Not real comics.

It was refreshing to put ink to paper and think "you're drawing this for yourself, man.  Have a blast."  I swear, for the last few months I thought I was drawing a private book for me and my editors only.  I was brainwashed but what I thought the industry has become and figured nobody really cared about this kind of book.  I was just a little bit wrong.

It seems that people out there are very pleased and excited for this release and I'm floored at the response so far.  Retailers, bookstores, fans, companies... any and everybody has been sending their kind words on this project so far and I'm flattered to no end.  It's great to be apart of this and can't wait for everyone to have it there at home!

I'll shut up now!

Congrats Skottie! Hope to see more and more books from you.
BTW, so you discovered Breccia? he was a true genius! try to find "el eternauta" or "perramus" (there are 2 versions of el eternauta and also a bunch of sequels, make sure to get his version).
Cheers!

I know what you mean about "Dark and Real," it's part of why the Manga community is so huge right now. (That's not me trying to convince anyone manga > normal comics, I don't think that myself)

In the Manga industry, especially right now, there number of Whimsical and funny stories and the like just exceed the current in normal comics market. And if in reality number wise it's about the same, popularity of comics would say Manga has the lead in that category.

Honestly, I read from both.
Ultimate Spiderman <3
Bleach <3
etc...

I'm not much of a comedy guy, but both of those have just enough of comedy/seriousness to fill my needs, along with whatever else I choose to read.

Skottie,

It's up to artist like you and the others out there to be pioneers and show that caricature and an animated drawing style can make a story just as good or better than any photo realistic rendering.

I think people should stop thinking of comic book artists as comic book artists and see them for what they truly are. Artists and story tellers who use the medium of comics to express themselves.

Keep fighting the good fight and keep up all the great work.

Skottie, Realistically, when is this project due to hit shelves?

Hey Skottie, your work is amazing. I know you have already developed your technique as far as inking is concerned and there is no greater satisfaction than inking your own work. I am trying to use Manga Debut to ink my stuff. What program do you use to ink? Any tips you can pass on? I wish I had the money to get that tablet you have, eventually I know I will, cause it's better to do digital work on it, instead of on a wacom standard tablet like mine. Any advice you can shed will be greatly appreciated.

Skottie,
You Rock. I'm fired up to see the finished product. I'm a huge fan. It's nice to see someone of your caliber taking on this project. It's hard to find some of the lighter stuff that is good quality. keep up the good work.
Not sure if you are familiar with Mike Kunkel's Hero Bear and the Kid. It's a great story that would fall in this catagory.

You are changing the game my man! Pencil done digitally...inks on paper. Crazyness!
And you're right, people never expect much out of "cartoony, light, comics". You're about to hit them bitches with a brick. Keep it going man.
Peace.

love the cover man! and i can't wait to read the book.

i think your totally right about the comics (in the west at least, japan are more open), not in tights not a comic. a comic is a medium not a genre, you can tell any story you want via comics. i love how your out there pushing it man! we need people like you to help break new ground

awesome art...and i love Sketchbook Pro, too. Beautifully organic reaction. Did you print the pencils off and lightbox them? The pencils are obviously on Marvel paper.

Skottie,

Great job as always. In your pencil sketch, I noticed that there were alot of rough lines at the edges and there is not a single line that defines the edges of your objects. I wanted to know, do you clean them up digitally and sort of decide and define the edges of the objects? OR do you define the objects while INKING? I remember you said you felt bored going over the same lines while inking your pencils. Is this your way of sort of keeping it fresh? I hope my question makes sense a bit? I guess I just wanted to know how you go about your transition from your pencils to inks.
